For Shinji

I still don’t know exactly
what it means to be
beautiful,

but I imagine that Roald Dahl
got it close enough:

Crooked noses, criss-cross teeth—
happiness so loud and heavy
it rearranges the position
of bones, muscle.

But then there are people
who are quietly, softly beautiful,
like a summer rain,
and you want to stand beneath them 
and tilt your head back and
whip the clouds into shape
with your hands; collect
fistfuls of water and
drink until the bowl is empty.

And it’s lovely, the bowl,
deep and edged in 24k gold,
with a rose painted by a careful
hand on the side;

still warm from the kiln,
still smelling of sky.
